Bone densitometry is a simple procedure that measures your bone mineral density (BMD) and compares it to a normal population of people
who are the same age, weight, sex, and ethnic background. We use a very low energy x-ray beam from a CT scanner to produce an image of your
lumbar spine and hip. This study takes about 15 minutes. Once the study is completed, your doctor then uses the information to assess your
bone condition, analyze your risk of fracture, and to decide if treatment is necessary.
Quantitative Computerized Tomography (
QCT) bone densitometry is the most precise method of assessing bone health and risk of
osteoporosis. QCT provides a measurement that is within 0.7%-1.1% of your true bone mass, which is much more precise than the more commonly
used "DEXA" exam. If you are already undergoing treatment or therapy for osteoporosis or osteopenia (low bone density), we recommend
periodic follow-up studies to measure changes in your bone density.
