PROCEDURE PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:
ARTHROGRAM PREPARATION
Wear comfortable clothing. Please inform the nurse or technologist if you have any allergy to iodine or shellfish. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF THERE IS
ANY CHANCE YOU MAY BE PREGNANT.
BARIUM ENEMA (BE) / LOWER GASTROINTESTINAL (LOWER GI) PREPARATION
Pick-up a preparation kit at our office at least two days prior to your exam.
BARIUM SWALLOW / UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL (UPPER GI) PREPARATION
Have a light evening meal without dairy products the night before your exam, then take nothing by mouth (no smoking or chewing gum) after midnight. Usually,
medications may be taken with a small amount of water.
If you have any questions regarding medications, please contact our office.
BONE DENSITOMETRY (QCT) PREPARATION
Wear comfortable clothing. Sweat suits or soft cotton clothing are good choices. Metal objects like belt buckles, rivets, snaps, zippers, and
buttons over the mid-abdomen or hip areas interfere with the scan and you will need to remove them.
We have an excellent brochure that goes into much greater detail on Osteoporosis and QCT.
Please click here to access
this brochure.
As with any x-ray procedure there are some limiting factors for QCT. This exam should
NOT be performed under the following circumstances:
- PREGNANCY: THIS EXAM CANNOT BE PERFORMED ON PREGNANT WOMEN!
- Previous surgery on the lower back with internal fixation: wires, screws, Harrington rods, spine cages, etc.
- Previous hip fracture with or without internal fixation screws or pins or previous hip replacement surgery.
BREAST MRI PREPARATION
-
Do not eat or drink anything except water beginning four hours before your exam. It is preferable that you are well hydrated for the exam, so we
encourage you to drink up to 24 ounces of water from 4 hours up until one hour prior to your exam.
- If you take medication, use water to swallow it.
- If you have been advised not to take your medication on an empty stomach, you may eat a few soda crackers within that four hour period.
-
Wear comfortable clothing, preferably including pants that are completely free of all metal, with a drawstring or elastic waistband. You will
be asked to remove your top and your bra and put on a gown. If you do not have metal-free pants, we will provide some for you.
COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT / CAT SCAN) PREPARATION
You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your CT exam. Metal objects can affect the image, so avoid clothing with zippers and snaps. You may
be asked to remove hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and any removable dental work that could obscure the images. You may also be asked to refrain
from eating or drinking anything for an hour or longer before the exam.
ALWAYS INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR X-RAY TECHNOLOGIST IF THERE IS ANY POSSIBILITY THAT YOU
MAY BE PREGNANT. This exam SHOULD NOT BE PERFORMED if you are pregnant or allergic to contrast media. If you are allergic to iodine based x-ray dye,
we can give you medications that will allow you to complete the exam without reacting to the dye.
If you are breastfeeding, please call our office.
CT Procedure-Specific Preparation:
-
Brain/Posterior Fossa/Chest/IAC/Neck (Soft Tissues):
Do not eat 4 hours prior to the exam. We encourage you to be well hydrated and want you to drink clear liquids up to 2 hours before the exam.
-
Abdomen/Pelvis:
Pick up a preparation kit at our office the afternoon before your study.
-
Sinus:
No special preparation necessary.
CORONARY CALCIUM SCORE (HEART SCAN) PREPARATION
Preparation for a Heart Scan is minimal. We simply request that you do not consume any caffeine for 12 hours prior to the examination.
CT / CAT SCAN GUIDED BIOPSIES PREPARATION
There is a risk of bleeding whenever the skin is penetrated. For this reason, if you are taking aspirin or other blood thinners, your physician may advise
you to stop three days before the procedure. Depending on the location and organ we are biopsying and the type of needle that we anticipate using, we may
require a blood test prior to performing the biopsy.
You will need a relative or friend present to lend support and to drive you home after the procedure.
DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY PREPARATION
Before scheduling a mammogram, we recommend that you discuss any new findings or problems in your breasts with your doctor. In addition, inform your
doctor of any prior surgeries, hormone use, and family or personal history of breast cancer.
Do not schedule your mammogram for the week before your period if your breasts are usually tender during this time. The best time is up to 10 days
following your period. ALWAYS INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR X-RAY TECHNOLOGIST IF THERE IS ANY POSSIBILITY THAT YOU ARE PREGNANT.
Take a shower the morning of the exam, but do not apply deodorant, perfume, or powder to underarms or breast area after your shower. Prior to your
exam, describe any breast symptoms or problems to the technologist performing the exam. If possible, obtain prior mammograms taken at another facility
and bring them with you to your appointment so that they may be available to the radiologist at the time of the current exam.
Before the examination, you will be asked to remove all jewelry, any metal objects, and clothing above the waist. You will be given and asked to put on
a gown that opens in the front.
HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAM PREPARATION
A hysterosalpingogram is generally performed within 7-12 days of your last menstrual period. Please inform the nurse or technologist if you have any
allergy to iodine or iodine-based x-ray dye.
INTRAVENOUS PYELOGRAM (IVP) PREPARATION
Pick up a preparation kit and special dietary instructions at our office at least two days prior to your exam. Drink fluids up to 2 hours before the exam.
If you are breastfeeding, please call our office.
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) / OPEN MRI PREPARATION
-
Because the strong magnetic field used for MRI will pull on any metal object implanted in your body, the MRI staff will ask whether you have
a prosthetic hip, heart pacemaker (or artificial heart valve), implanted port (brand names Port-o-Cath, Infusaport, Lifeport), intrauterine
device (IUD), or any metal plates, pins, screws, or surgical staples in your body. In most cases, surgical staples, plates, pins and screws
pose no risk during MRI if they have been in place for more than 4-6 weeks.
-
Tattoos and permanent eyeliner may also create a problem. You will be asked if you have ever had bullets or shrapnel in your body, or ever worked
with metal. If there is any question of metal fragments in your body (especially in the eye), you may be asked to have an x-ray that will detect
any such objects. Tooth fillings usually are not affected by the magnetic field, but they may distort images of the facial area or brain, so the
radiologist should be aware of them. The same is true of braces, which may make it hard to "tune" the MRI unit to your body. You will be
asked to remove anything that might degrade MRI images of the head, including hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and any removable dental work.
- If you are breastfeeding or if you think you may be pregnant, please call our office.
- The radiologist or technologist may ask about drug allergies and whether you have had any sort of head surgery.
MRI Procedure-Specific Preparation:
-
Brain/Orbits/Sinuses:
Do not wear eye makeup.
-
Abdomen/Pelvis:
Do not eat 4 hours prior to the exam. You may drink clear liquids up to 2 hours before your exam. Medications may be taken with a small amount of water.
-
All Other MRI:
If IV contrast has been ordered by your physician, do not eat 4 hours prior to the exam. You may drink clear liquids up to 2 hours before the exam.
If you expect to be sedated, do not eat 4 hours prior to the exam. You may drink clear liquids up to 2 hours before the exam.
POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY/CT (PET/CT) PREPARATION
Prior To Your PET Exam:*
- If you are concerned that you are claustrophobic, please contact us.
- If you are a female of childbearing years, you must have a blood pregnancy test, and we must have the results in your chart.
- Do not exercise 24 hours prior to your exam.
- If you have been given a contrast agent for your bowel, follow those instructions.
- If you are breast-feeding, you will not be able to nurse your child for 24 hours following the exam. Plan accordingly.
On the Day of Your PET Exam:*
- Wear warm, comfortable metal-free clothing.
- Bring the remaining contrast to your appointment.
- Empty catheter and/or colostomy bag(s) prior to arriving at the Center.
- Bring films and reports from any previous diagnostic imaging procedure (CT, MRI, PET) not performed at our facility.
- Be on time. Due to the short half-life of the radioisotope, being late for your appointment can compromise your exam.
- Family members may accompany you to the Center, but for radiation safety reasons must remain in the waiting room during the exam.
- If you feel feverish, let the technologist know.
- For 6-8 hours after the exam avoid pregnant women and children.
- You do not need to use special precautions with body fluids after your PET scan.
*Note: Carefully follow the preparation instructions for your AM or PM appointment that are listed on the back of your order form.
STEREOTACTIC (X-RAY GUIDED) BREAST BIOPSY PREPARATION
If you are taking aspirin or a blood thinner, your physician may want you to stop three days prior to the biopsy.
ULTRASOUND / FOUR-DIMENSIONAL (4D) ULTRASOUND PREPARATION
You should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam.
Ultrasound Procedure-Specific Preparation:
Pelvic/Obstetric:
- Your bladder must be full. You will have the urge to urinate with a full bladder.
- IF YOUR BLADDER IS NOT FULL ENOUGH, YOUR STUDY MAY BE DELAYED OR RESCHEDULED.
-
Empty your bladder two hours before the exam, then drink four (4) 8 oz. glasses of water. Do not urinate until after your exam. The more
slowly your bladder fills, the less uncomfortable it will be.
- For late-term obstetric cases (after 30 weeks), no preparation is necessary. Your bladder may be empty.
Abdomen/Gallbladder:
- Have a light dinner no later than 7pm the night before your exam.
- Do not eat again until after your exam. You must not have eaten for at least 8 hours prior to this exam to make it completely diagnostic.
- You may take medications with a small amount of water.
Please call our office if you have any questions.
ULTRASOUND GUIDED BREAST BIOPSY PREPARATION
Although ultrasound-guided breast biopsy is minimally invasive, there is a risk of bleeding whenever the skin is penetrated. For this reason, if you are taking
aspirin or a blood thinner, your physician may advise you to stop three days before the procedure.
A breast biopsy always raises concern about cancer, so you may want to have a relative or friend present to lend support and to drive you home after the procedure.
ULTRASOUND GUIDED BIOPSIES/ASPIRATIONS (DRAINAGES) & THORACENTESIS/PARACENTESIS PREPARATION
Although ultrasound-guided biopsies and drainages are minimally invasive, there is a risk of bleeding whenever the skin is penetrated. For this reason, if you
are taking aspirin or a blood thinner, your physician may advise you to stop three days before the procedure.
You may want to consider having a relative or friend present to lend support and to drive you home after the procedure.
WIRE LOCALIZATION PREPARATION
If you are taking aspirin or a blood thinner, your physician may want you to stop three days prior to the wire localization.
X-RAY (RADIOGRAPHY) PREPARATION
We do not require any special preparation for most bone or chest x-rays. Once you arrive, you may be asked to change into a gown before your examination. You may also
be asked to remove jewelry, eyeglasses, pins, and any other metal objects that might obscure the images.
ALWAYS INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR X-RAY TECHNOLOGIST IF THERE IS ANY POSSIBILITY THAT YOU ARE PREGNANT.
